In the days to come we will learn about our Lutheran way of Worship
For Lutherans, worship begins with God, not with us and what we have to offer to God. It is like a conversation, one that God starts as He speaks words of life to lost and dying people. In this conversation God’s people respond to Him after He has first spoken. This is consistent with our most basic beliefs which states that we are saved by God’s gave through the faith he gives us and not by any work on our part. We do respond to him with good works that are a proof of the faith within us. The liturgy serves as a visual aid, after all, the chief purpose of all ceremonies is to teach the people what they need to know about Christ.
The word “liturgy” comes from a first century term meaning “for the sake of the empire.” To the Greeks it meant public duties like a tax collected for equipping a fleet. Christians took this understanding of responsibility or “service” as they translated it, and made some adjustments to it.
- Not for the sake of the empire, but for the life of the world. (John 6) What no one else in the world could do.
- Stand in the presence of God and receive the gifts (forgiveness-life-salvation) of Christ.
- Not doing it just for themselves, but for the world. In the liturgy God was recreating the world.
This was a passive act because they were receiving God’s gifts through the faith He also given them. There was a strong sense of mission in their liturgy: to proclaim the Gospel by sharing the gifts they received from God.
Before the service actually begins, the organist plays the prelude. The word “prelude” comes form two Latin words meaning “to play before” something. The music sets the mood of the service. When you hear lively music on the radio or TV, you want to move, tap your fingers, or dance. When you hear quiet music, you want to settle down and be quiet too. The prelude prepares you for what is to come.
